The Outermost Inn: The Ideal Martha’s Vineyard Escape

Imagine a day spent strolling along pristine beaches, letting the gentle breezes and fresh ocean air relax your mind and refresh your senses.  In the evening, take in a sail and watch the sun dip lower and lower in the sky, flooding the Vineyard Sound with golden light.  Enjoy a delicious meal prepared by one of the Vineyard’s finest chefs, then drift off to dream in a quiet, cozy room.

All of this and more can be found in one place on beautiful Martha’s Vineyard: The Outmost Inn.  Built on the island’s western tip and surrounded by meadows and natural landscapes, this getaway seems a world away from the busier tourist towns of Edgartown or Vineyard Haven. Since we discovered it several years ago, it has become a favorite of ours as well as many LaMer Concierge clients.

Hosts Hugh and Jeanne Taylor have lived on the Vineyard year-round since 1971, when they built their home. The property was reconstructed over 20 years ago to accommodate seven guest suites, each with sweeping views.  In the evenings, Hugh can often be found at the piano in the sitting room entertaining guests or encouraging others to play a song or two.

Breathtaking views like this are just a stroll from the Inn.

Accommodations at The Outermost Inn are simple, yet comfortable. Each of the airy rooms features hardwood floors, plenty of closet space and large windows that bring the outdoors in. Our favorite is the Lighthouse Suite, which features a private stairway, separate living area and a wonderful outdoor sitting space. The views of Vineyard Sound are spectacular. Whether you’re staying for an evening or a week, it immediately feels like a home away from home.

After a day on the island, there is nothing better than enjoying a drink on the Outermost Inn’s sloping lawn, watching the sunset over the cliffs and taking in the nostalgic beauty of the Gay Head lighthouse. Depending on the season, you can often see island deer wandering across the lawn.

Dinner at the Outmost Inn is truly a remarkable experience as well.  Since joining the Inn two  years ago, Scott Cummings has quickly becoming one of the island’s best-known and most-acclaimed chefs.  In fact, it’s easy to see why reservations must be made weeks—and sometimes months—in advance. From the first course to the last, every selection is fresh and full of flavor. Herbs and vegetables are harvested from the Inn’s private garden, often picked within hours of being served.

While you are sure to be pleased with any menu choice, we recommend starting with the Local 02539 Oyster, which is truly a phenomenal opening course.  Served with a beautiful ratatouille, the wild striper is a delicious main dish, as is the Elysian Fields Lamb Cannon.   If you enjoy a sweet end to dinner, we cannot recommend the Chef Cummings’ Blueberry Lemon Parfait highly enough. The trio of cheese is also a perfect finishing course.  The wine list is excellent, and we do suggest giving the Inn’s special cocktails a try as well.
